THE ROLE OF FATHERS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT: This study examined the role of fathers in early childhood education and development. The objectives were to: (1) assess the impact of paternal involvement on children's cognitive and emotional development, (2) evaluate the influence of fathers' educational practices on early learning, and (3) explore the barriers to paternal engagement in early childhood education. A survey design was employed to gather extensive data from fathers, educators, and mothers regarding paternal involvement. A sample size of 200 fathers and educators was selected using purposive sampling. The case study focused on early childhood education centers in Kano State, Nigeria. Findings indicated that paternal involvement had a significant positive impact on children's cognitive and emotional development. Fathers' educational practices were found to enhance early learning, and various barriers to paternal engagement were identified, including work commitments and cultural norms. It was recommended that early childhood education programs actively encourage paternal involvement and that policies be developed to support fathers in balancing work and family responsibilities to enhance their engagement in early childhood education.
